Domains for Course Creators Launching Their First Cohort

A guide for first-time cohort creators on picking a great domain fast, without getting stuck in auction bidding wars before launch day.

You've got a curriculum. You don't have a name.

I've talked to a lot of first-time cohort-based course creators. The pattern's always the same. Three months building the actual course. Then two days before launch, they're frantically Googling domain names at 11pm.

Sound familiar? Let's fix it.

The naming trap most creators fall into

Your course probably isn't called "The Course." It's got a real name, a promise baked in. Maybe it's "Ship Your First SaaS." Maybe it's "Copywriting Sprint." Whatever it is, you want that exact phrase as your domain, not a version with "get" tacked on the front or "hq" bolted onto the end.

Good phrase-match domains for niche topics get registered constantly, then abandoned when the creator pivots, quits, or never launches. That's good news for you, actually. Those domains don't vanish into thin air. They sit in a queue waiting to expire. A lot of them land on marketplaces long before they ever hit a public auction.

Why auctions are the wrong move here

Auctions are built for domain investors with time and a bidding strategy. You have neither. You've got a cohort starting in six weeks and a landing page that needs a URL today, not in ten days when the auction closes.

Bidding wars mean unpredictable final prices, sometimes double what a domain's worth to you. They mean days of refreshing a page to see if you won. They mean zero guarantee you get it at all.

None of that works when you're trying to open enrollment on a schedule.

What I'd actually look for

If I were launching a cohort tomorrow, here's my shortlist criteria:

  • 1. Short enough to say out loud on a podcast without spelling it
  • 2. Matches the outcome, not the format (skip "cohort" or "bootcamp" in the name itself)
  • 3. .com if it exists, but a clean .co or .io works fine for a course brand
  • 4. No hyphens. Ever. Your students will mistype them, every single time
  • Check your shortlist against what's actually available right now. Stop dreaming about a domain someone's still sitting on.

Flat price, no bidding, no drama

This is basically why I built NotRenewing. Every domain on there runs $99 flat. No auction countdown. No proxy bidding. No "current bid" refreshing every ten seconds while you're supposed to be writing your sales page.

You find a name. You check the price (still $99). You buy it. Then you get back to recording videos and answering pre-launch DMs, which beats domain speculation as a use of your Tuesday afternoon.

Your first cohort deserves a URL that sounds like a real business. Not a placeholder you're embarrassed to put on a slide. Go check what's available before your launch date sneaks up on you.
